Hearing The Voice Of God

It’s amazing how our personalities play a part in every facet of our lives.  I remember as a new Christian people would say to me, “you need to hear the voice of God”. I didn’t understand what that meant. How do you really know when you hear God’s voice? When I would ask that question, I would receive a lot of different answers. Unfortunately, none were especially helpful in teaching me how to hear God’s voice.

It wasn’t until I had my own experience in hearing God’s voice that I understood this to be as individual as our relationship with Him. Let me tell you a story about my sister Kim and how through this relationship I first came to hear God’s voice.

Kim and I were a year apart and as kids shared a bedroom. Throughout the years we became very close. When Kim had my nephew Everett, she discovered that her kidneys were failing. By the time she attempted to address the problem, she only had 20% of her kidney function. Things rapidly went downhill from there. Kim lost all kidney function, and had to be placed on dialysis.

After Kim had been on dialysis for approximately 12 years, God spoke to me. He said “Kim will not be with you for very long.” That wasn’t what I expected. I couldn’t accept that the first time I heard His voice it would be bad news.

God told me to celebrate my sister’s life.  Since her 45th birthday was coming soon, we gave her a birthday party. I was thrilled to host this party because I loved my sister and as a Sanguine personality we love throwing parties. The theme was “Live like a star”. We arranged for everything from getting her hair done to purchasing a special outfit. Her best friend invited her to dinner for her birthday as a ruse. When they arrived to pick me up, Kim had no idea that we had a big surprise for her. I can still see her smiling from ear-to-ear. Approximately 150 people came to celebrate her. She had a wonderful time at the party.

The next day, Kim said she felt as though she was floating on a cloud. My sister was a Melancholy personality. Melancholies are prone to depression. Prior to the party, she said she was going through a depression and this party lifted her up. God gave Kim what she needed when she needed it.

Kim turned 45 years old on April 15 and went home to be with the Lord on February 10th the following year.  I now know that God was preparing me for her departure. I’m thankful God used me and my personality to celebrate her last birthday on earth in a big way. Thank you Lord for preparing and keeping me and most of all allowing me to hear your voice!
